William Shakespeare (baptized on 26 April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon; died there on 23 April 1616) was an English playwright, poet and actor. His birthday is traditionally celebrated on 23 April. Shakespeare is regarded as one of the central figures of world literature: his tragedies, comedies, histories and sonnets have been read, performed, translated, filmed and reinterpreted for centuries.

Shakespeare was baptized in Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire. His father, John Shakespeare, was a glover and held civic offices; his mother, Mary Arden, came from a landholding family. No school lists survive, but it is likely that Shakespeare attended the local grammar school and received a humanist education with a strong emphasis on Latin. At eighteen he married Anne Hathaway. They had three children: Susanna and the twins Hamnet and Judith.
The years between the baptism of the twins in 1585 and Shakespeare's documented reputation in London in the early 1590s are often called the lost years. What is certain is that by 1592 he was present in London's theatre world. He became an actor, shareholder and regular dramatist with the Lord Chamberlain's Men, one of the most important playing companies of the period. After the accession of James I, the company became the King's Men in 1603.
Shakespeare wrote for a living, commercial theatre. His plays were not made for quiet reverence, but for voices, bodies, quick shifts of scene and an audience alert to wit, suspense, violence, love, politics and verbal art. In works such as Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, Macbeth and The Tempest, he joined poetic density with close observation of human conflict.
Shakespeare's success in London was also visible in Stratford. In 1597 he bought New Place, one of the largest houses in the town. Further property and land transactions followed. He was therefore not simply a London theatre man, but kept close ties to his home town. This double life shapes his image: an author at the center of the theatre business and at the same time a man securing social rise, property and family in Stratford.

After Shakespeare's death, his colleagues John Heminge and Henry Condell gathered many of his plays for print. The First Folio, published in 1623, is therefore one of the most important books in literary history. It contains 36 plays and preserved many works that might otherwise have been lost, including Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Twelfth Night and The Tempest. The fact that Shakespeare is performed worldwide today owes not only to his language, but also to this concrete act of editorial preservation.
William Shakespeare died in Stratford-upon-Avon on 23 April 1616 and was buried in Holy Trinity Church. The cause of death is not known. His work endured because it can become present again and again on stage: power and conscience, love and jealousy, language and deception, comedy and loss. Shakespeare wrote from a specific Elizabethan and Jacobean theatre world, but his characters still matter because they do not speak like monuments; they speak like people in motion.
