When Leonid Hurwicz received the 2007 Nobel Prize in Economics for his theory of mechanism design, he was 90 years old — according to the Nobel Foundation, the oldest person ever to be awarded a Nobel. Too frail to travel to Stockholm, he accepted it in a lecture hall in Minneapolis, where the Swedish ambassador handed it to him in person.
