Amitai Etzioni (born Werner Falk on 4 January 1929 in Cologne; died 31 May 2023 in Washington, D.C.) was an Israeli-American sociologist of German-Jewish origin. He became especially associated with communitarianism, socioeconomics and the question of how individual rights and social responsibility can be held together.

Childhood between Cologne and Palestine

Etzioni was born in Cologne into a Jewish family. His parents left Germany in the 1930s and reached Palestine. Werner Falk became Amitai Etzioni, a Hebrew name connected with truth and belonging. The experience of flight, war and a new beginning shaped his thinking: society meant protection, attachment and responsibility.

Israel, study and the United States

As a young man Etzioni joined the Palmach and experienced the struggle surrounding the founding of Israel. After the war he studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in an environment shaped in part by Martin Buber. He later went to the University of California, Berkeley, earned a doctorate in sociology and began an academic career in the United States. He taught for many years at Columbia University and later at George Washington University.

Communitarianism

Etzioni became one of the voices of communitarianism in the United States. In books such as The Active Society and The Spirit of Community, he asked how freedom, rights, family, school, neighbourhood and the common good can be balanced. He argued against a view of people as isolated calculators of advantage. At the same time, he did not present community as authoritarian constraint.

Politics and public debate

Etzioni advised the White House under Jimmy Carter in 1979 and 1980 and later took part in debates about civic duties, privacy, security, foreign policy and moral dialogue. He founded institutions and journals, including the Communitarian Network and The Responsive Community. His writing was academic, but often directed toward public argument.

Farewell

Amitai Etzioni died in Washington, D.C., on 31 May 2023. He was 94 years old. His work remains connected with a central question: how can a society protect freedom without losing the bonds on which trust, responsibility and common action depend?
