Bess Lomax Hawes (* 21. January 1921 in Austin; † 27. November 2009 in Portland) was an american folk musician and folklorist. She was 88 years old. Her education included Bryn Mawr College and University of California, Berkeley. She worked at California State University, Northridge and Smithsonian Institution. She was awarded the National Medal of Arts. Her cause of death was stroke.
