Biography

Dirk Bach (born 23 April 1961 in Cologne; died 1 October 2012 in Berlin) was a German actor, comedian, presenter, audiobook narrator and activist. He moved between independent theatre, municipal stages, series, children's programmes, comedy and entertainment shows, while remaining recognisable as an alert, quick and warm stage presence.

Cologne beginnings

Bach grew up in Cologne and came to the stage without formal drama-school training. In the 1980s he worked in the independent theatre scene and became visible through Walter Bockmayer's production of Geierwally at Cologne's Theater in der Filmdose. His comedy grew from timing, physical awareness, language and the courage to exaggerate.

Theatre and television

In 1992 Bach became a permanent ensemble member at Schauspiel Köln. At the same time he became present on television, first with formats such as the Dirk Bach Show, later with series, presenting work and entertainment programmes. He could carry a silly scene and stand on a theatre stage in a serious text the same evening. That simultaneity belonged to his profile: entertainment and acting fed each other.

Jungle camp and language

From 2004 Bach co-hosted the RTL jungle camp with Sonja Zietlow. Through his jokes, quick reactions and double meanings, the format became easier to read as satire. For many viewers he was the voice that named the absurdity of the show without losing its sense of play. He also narrated audiobooks, worked for children's programmes and remained active in theatre.

Commitment

Bach lived openly as a gay man and worked for gay rights, AIDS education, Aidshilfe Köln, Amnesty International and PETA. This commitment belonged to his public presence and to an attitude that could connect humour with solidarity.

Berlin and Cologne

Dirk Bach died in Berlin on 1 October 2012; heart failure was reported as the probable cause. He was 51 years old. In 2025 a square in front of the Schauspielhaus in Cologne was officially named after him. His name thus returned to a place connected with his artistic beginnings and with his city.
