His education included San Diego State University, University of California, Berkeley, San Diego High School and Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. His faith was Catholicism. He received 9 awards, including National Medal of Arts, Donostia Award. His cause of death was bronchopneumonia. He was buried at Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels.
