He studied at Hamburger Universität für Wirtschaft und Politik. He worked at Building and Construction Union and Confederation of German Trade Unions. His awards include honorary citizenship, Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
