Memorial Page for Helmuth Rilling

Helmuth Rilling (born 29 May 1933 in Stuttgart; died 11 February 2026 in Warmbronn near Leonberg) was a German conductor, organist and university teacher. His name is closely connected with Johann Sebastian Bach, the Gächinger Kantorei, the Bach-Collegium Stuttgart and the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart.

Training and first ensembles

Rilling grew up in Württemberg and was shaped by Protestant church music. He studied organ, composition and choral conducting in Stuttgart and later continued his training in Italy. In 1954, while still a student, he founded the Gächinger Kantorei. Over decades this choir became an ensemble through which Rilling realised his ideas of textual clarity, choral sound and sacred music.

Bach as a life's work

In 1965 Rilling founded the Bach-Collegium Stuttgart. Choir and orchestra became the centre of a work especially directed toward Bach. Between 1970 and 1985 Rilling became the first conductor to record all of Bach's sacred cantatas. The large Edition Bachakademie followed later. His interpretation sought clear articulation, understandable text and a theological-musical reading.

Internationale Bachakademie and Oregon

Rilling did not treat Bach as museum material. In 1970 he helped found the Oregon Bach Festival, which he shaped for decades. In 1981 he founded the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart. There he connected performance, research, teaching and encounter. Singers and conductors from many countries worked with him on cantatas, passions, oratorios and on how sacred music can speak in the present.

New music and teaching

Rilling did not stop with Bach. For the Bach year 2000 he commissioned new Passion settings from composers including Wolfgang Rihm, Sofia Gubaidulina, Osvaldo Golijov and Tan Dun. Krzysztof Penderecki's Credo was also connected with his work; the recording won a Grammy. Rilling was also a teacher and mediator who treated rehearsal as shared understanding.

Farewell

Helmuth Rilling died in Warmbronn on 11 February 2026. He was 92 years old. His work remains audible in choirs, recordings, festivals and institutions. It shows a musician who did not treat Bach as a monument, but as a living task for voice, language, faith and the present.
