Ivana Trump (born 20 February 1949 in Gottwaldov, Czechoslovakia; died 14 July 2022 in New York City) was a Czech-American businesswoman, former athlete, model, author and public figure. She became widely known as the first wife of Donald Trump and as the mother of Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump and Eric Trump. Her own biography reaches further: she came from competitive sport, worked as a model, became part of 1980s New York society and built her own business and media projects after the marriage.
She was born Ivana Marie Zelníčková in Gottwaldov, now Zlín in the Czech Republic. She grew up in communist Czechoslovakia and took up skiing early. Sport opened paths outward before she later reached the United States through Canada and the fashion industry. That background shaped her public image: in New York, Ivana Trump appeared not only as the wife of a real estate entrepreneur, but also as a woman who had built a new career after coming from a different political and social system.
In 1977 Ivana Zelníčková married Donald Trump. The couple became a fixed part of New York public life in the 1980s. Ivana Trump worked on projects within the Trump Organization, including hotels, interiors and brand presentation. During these years the two were often portrayed as a society couple, yet Ivana was more than decorative company. She took on visible responsibilities, developed her own media presence and was closely connected with building a particular image of luxury and success.
The marriage produced three children: Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump and Eric Trump. The separation and divorce from Donald Trump were intensely followed in public in the early 1990s. In many accounts, that part of her life overshadowed everything else. It matters to her biography, but it is not enough. Ivana Trump remained an independent public figure after the divorce, used her name commercially and spoke openly about family, work, status and self-assertion.
After the marriage, Ivana Trump published books, wrote columns, appeared on television and marketed her own products, including fashion, jewelry and cosmetics lines. She understood the mechanics of publicity well: name, style, biography and appearance became economic resources. She moved between serious business, celebrity and entertainment. That mix made her a characteristic figure of the late 1980s and 1990s, when media presence and brand-building were becoming ever more closely linked.
Ivana Trump died in New York City on 14 July 2022. The New York City medical examiner later classified her death as an accident. Public reports focused heavily on the Trump name. A calmer view also shows a story of immigration, career and media: Ivana Trump became part of a highly visible American family, while remaining a person with her own origins, work history and style.
