John Lennon (born 9 October 1940 in Liverpool; died 8 December 1980 in New York City) was a British singer, songwriter, guitarist, author and peace activist. As a founder of the Beatles and as Paul McCartney's songwriting partner, he decisively shaped twentieth-century popular music. After the Beatles ended, he and Yoko Ono became among the most visible figures of the counterculture and peace movement. His work connects melody, wit, vulnerability, provocation and the wish to make pop music a public stance.

Lennon was born in Liverpool during the Second World War. His parents, Alfred and Julia Lennon, lived apart, and John grew up mainly with his aunt Mimi Smith in Woolton. This childhood was not romantic, but shaped by absence, discipline and conflicting attachments. His mother Julia brought music close to him, but died in a road accident in 1958. That early loss remained a wound that later returned in songs about mothers, longing and abandonment.
In 1956 Lennon founded the skiffle group The Quarrymen. On 6 July 1957 he met Paul McCartney at a performance in Woolton; from that meeting came one of the most consequential partnerships in pop history. George Harrison joined, later Ringo Starr. Out of changing names, Liverpool clubs and the hard nights in Hamburg came a band that translated speed, wit, harmony singing and American rock and roll into its own language. Lennon was not only singer and guitarist, but an engine of irony, attack and melodic instinct.
With Love Me Do, Please Please Me, the early albums and the appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, the Beatles became a worldwide phenomenon from 1963 and 1964 onward. Lennon and McCartney wrote in competition and dialogue. Lennon often brought the rougher, more skeptical and sharper verbal side: from early pop songs through Help! and In My Life to more experimental work such as Strawberry Fields Forever. He was not a smooth hero of enthusiasm, but a voice that brought doubt, bravado and self-observation into pop form.
The second half of the 1960s made Lennon more famous and more restless at the same time. The Beatles stopped regular touring in 1966, worked more freely in the studio and, with albums such as Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and The Beatles, became part of a new pop avant-garde. At the same time, tensions within the group sharpened. Lennon's relationship with Yoko Ono, his interest in conceptual art, drugs, political language and personal exposure changed his work. When the Beatles broke apart in 1970, it could not be reduced to one person or one cause; it was the end of a complex shared system.

With Yoko Ono, Lennon connected music, performance, posters, interviews and political gesture. The Bed-Ins in Amsterdam and Montreal turned their honeymoon into a deliberately public peace action. Give Peace a Chance emerged from this setting and became a protest song against the Vietnam War. This phase was courageous and often effective, but also contradictory: Lennon's language of peace stood alongside a temperament that could be hurtful, vain and aggressive. His strongest work gains tension from that fact, because it does not show a flawless figure, but a person struggling with himself.
After the Beatles, Lennon first sounded radically stripped down. John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band from 1970 exposed pain, anger and family loss without the shelter of grand pop staging. In 1971 came Imagine, more accessible and melodic, but no less political. The title track later became one of the best-known peace songs in the world. At the same time Lennon wrote sharply against lies, nationalism, possessiveness and political certainty. His solo years were not a straight triumph; they included strong songs, weaker experiments, public pose and genuine search.
In the early 1970s Lennon and Ono lived in New York. His criticism of the Vietnam War and his proximity to left-wing activists led to surveillance and to attempts by the Nixon administration to deport him from the United States. After the birth of his son Sean in 1975, Lennon withdrew from the music business for several years. This period was often described as domestic peace, but it was also a phase of seclusion, reordering and reliance on Ono as manager of their shared life. In 1980 he returned with Double Fantasy, an album about marriage, daily life, parenthood and a new beginning.

John Lennon was shot outside the Dakota Building in Manhattan on the evening of 8 December 1980. He was 40 years old. His death caused grief around the world, but his life should not be read only through that moment. Lennon remains important because he could make pop music both simple and unsettled: a chorus that stays, a line that disturbs, a voice that can be soft and cutting. His legacy lies in the Beatles, in Imagine, in the contradictions of his public self and in a songcraft that still creates closeness without becoming harmless.
