Rudi Carrell, born Rudolf Wijbrand Kesselaar (19 December 1934 in Alkmaar; died 7 July 2006 in Bremen), was a Dutch entertainer, singer, television presenter, writer and producer. He first worked in the Netherlands and from the 1960s onward became a familiar voice in German television entertainment.

Alkmaar and early performances

Carrell came from a performing family; his father André Carrell appeared as a comedian. As a teenager, Rudi Carrell was already on stage and took over appearances when his father was unavailable. In the 1950s he moved into radio and television. In 1960 he represented the Netherlands at the Eurovision Song Contest in London.

Move to Germany

In the mid-1960s, Carrell came to West Germany. He learned the language but deliberately kept his Dutch accent as part of his stage persona. With the German Rudi Carrell Show, he combined music, sketches, game ideas and carefully prepared punchlines. His main workplace became Bremen and Radio Bremen.

Am laufenden Band

On 27 April 1974, Am laufenden Band began on ARD. The programme turned simple memory and game rounds into an elaborate Saturday evening format. Carrell worked with fixed timing, recurring songs and a visible sense for the mechanics of television entertainment. In 1975 he sang Wann wird's mal wieder richtig Sommer, a song that remained closely linked with his name.

Satire and later formats

In the 1980s, Carrell presented programmes including Rudis Tagesshow. A Khomeini parody caused diplomatic tensions between West Germany and Iran in 1987; Carrell apologised publicly. He later worked on formats such as Herzblatt, Die Rudi Carrell Show - Laß dich überraschen and 7 Tage, 7 Köpfe.

Final years

Carrell was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2005. In February 2006, he received the Goldene Kamera for lifetime achievement. Rudi Carrell died on 7 July 2006 in Bremen. His career connected Dutch origins, German television production and an entertainment language built on careful preparation.
