His education included Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth I College and Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys. He received 7 awards, including BAFTA Award for Best Film, Directors Guild of America Award. His cause of death was heart failure. He was buried at St Mary Magdalene church, Richmond, London.
