Roger Moore (born 14 October 1927 in London; died 23 May 2017 in Switzerland) was a British actor, author and UNICEF ambassador. He became known worldwide as James Bond, a role he played in seven official films between 1973 and 1985. Before Bond, he was already a major television star, especially as Simon Templar in The Saint. His career stands for elegance, dry humour, self-irony and a screen presence built less on hardness than on charm and timing.

Early years

Roger George Moore grew up in south London. After leaving school, he worked briefly in cartoon animation and came to acting through small film jobs. An early encounter with director Brian Desmond Hurst helped him gain a place at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. After military service, Moore returned to stage and screen. In the 1950s he worked in Britain and the United States, including television work and a contract with MGM.

Television breakthrough

Moore's breakthrough came first through television rather than cinema. After roles in series such as Ivanhoe, The Alaskans and Maverick, he became the defining screen version of Simon Templar in The Saint in 1962. The role combined adventure, polished manners, irony and the ability not to take himself too solemnly. The series ran until 1969 and made Moore internationally visible. In 1971, The Persuaders! followed, pairing him with Tony Curtis and further shaping his image as an elegant adventurer.

James Bond

In 1973 Moore took over as James Bond in Live and Let Die. He followed Sean Connery and George Lazenby, but did not turn the part into an imitation of either. His Bond was lighter, more ironic and often built more on verbal wit than on menace. That suited the 1970s and early 1980s, when the series leaned further into spectacle, exotic settings and humour. Moore played 007 seven times, from Live and Let Die to A View to a Kill. For many viewers, this mixture of distance, smile and adventure became their own memory of Bond.

Beyond Bond

Moore also remained visible outside the Bond series. His films included The Man Who Haunted Himself, Gold, The Wild Geese and The Sea Wolves. The Man Who Haunted Himself in particular showed a more serious and fractured side of his acting. Even so, Moore rarely treated his public image with solemnity. He could speak about his strengths and limits without diminishing the career. That calm self-irony became part of how he was remembered.

UNICEF

A second role, one he described as especially important to him, began in 1991: Moore became an international UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. Audrey Hepburn had introduced him to the organization's work. He then travelled for many years to UNICEF-supported programmes, speaking about child rights, HIV/AIDS, landmine injuries, child labour and iodine deficiency, while helping raise attention and funds. UNICEF honoured him as a steady voice for children. For his humanitarian work he was made Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1999 and Knight Commander in 2003.

Final years and death

In later life Moore was closely connected with Switzerland. He died there on 23 May 2017 at the age of 89. Reactions to his death remembered the Bond actor, but also the television star, author and UNICEF ambassador. He left behind seven 007 films, many television roles and a public image shaped by humour, courtesy and self-irony. His UNICEF work showed especially clearly that he did not merely manage fame, but used it on behalf of children in need.
