He was married to Élisabeth Badinter and Anne Vernon. His education included Paris Law Faculty, Faculty of Arts of Paris, Lycée Janson-de-Sailly, school Vaugelas and Columbia University. He received 10 awards, including Order of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, 1st class, Honorary doctor of the University of Zagreb. He was buried at Panthéon.
